We started serious recording of the debut record, at the newly refurbished Shiny Brown Sound. laying down tracks can be a somewhat boring exercise, as we re-re-re-re-re-re work each instrument, tracking over and over until the pinnacle of perfection is reached! record. playback. record. playback.record. playback... It's all for you, loyal fans. We do the work, so you don't have to! :) 'Short Bridge' is close... we will do the bass once more..(Herman! make it ROCK!) We have played with Danny a few times, He appears to enjoy our take on 'music'. We certainly dig playing with him.
If Danny wants to hang with the LBP, he can stay as long as he wants. He definitely brings the phat beats. Clayton is back on guitar (good idea) You can follow half the story on the Shiny Brown Sound blog, they follow us... Or we follow them……no one is sure how that works.. Speaking of which: LBP has not properly promoted the Shiny Brown Sound out there in White Oak.

We record there, and have heard other mixes (and raw tracks) recorded there. Suffice to say: There is no one better in the Greater Fredericksburg area. No one better in Virginia. (click the Fighting Hamster for more info)

Pay attention. Maybe you'll learn something.

Finally, 'Lottery' gets a demo - more fleshed out than the original 'Herman acoustic in the PillBox' demo. Clay helped work out the verses, and in an especially inspired moment, added a reggae-ish middle bit. It's coming along. More to come.

And 'Love is the Answer, Sex is the Question' has found itself. All that's left is Tom's official lead parts, and he's working on that. Another good one. and a little 'crazy' (that's an in joke....for now) Smiles all around.

Titles and entitlement: The War Against Words

Our newest recording on Myspace
is 'Wonderful Lie'.
It's like 'A Wonderful Life' without the "A" or the "f".

We have been cooking up some new stuff:
songs with titles like 'I Hate People', 'Far Away', and 'Love is the Answer, Sex is the Question'.

One song doesn't have a title, but the title isn't 'Untitled'. The title may be(come): 'Hidden Track'

Without a doubt, the most "interesting" song we have written so far is a little ditty entitled:
'The Queen Harbored Umbrage at the Wearing of the Gown'
If you don't listen carefully, you will miss the whole thing.
We haven't ventured into 'prog rock' territory before...

We put some songs up on the Myspace page,
and even heard from a couple of people that they liked the songs!
Remarkable.
I even got one review via email, and I have decided to share my response (without permission). Why? Who wants to read that crap?

warning: This bunch of jabber is about writing, being creative, our songs, and me being clever.
In other words: Yawn
But it felt like an interview for a local indie music rag, which I hope to do one day. (HINT)

I write the lyrics, but Tom contributes a few lines sometimes.He helped out with a couple of pivotal points in 'Void'. He also wrote the guitar, and gave it the title. He started it. We contribute to songs in varying percentages, like marriage! sometimes 50-50, sometimes 90-10....
I only recently started writing completely non-autobiographical lyrics - 4 songs in a row!
The newest (tentatively titled 'Dance with Me' )is about a young guy who gets some small lottery winnings, and because of that (and perhaps only because of that) he proposes to his girlfriend (offhandedly), who is (maybe) pregnant. Nothing remotely like that ever happened to me, or anyone I know or knew. I think.

"I just won a couple thousand dollars
playing our favorite number 328
So, maybe now, you want to make a go of it
I heard from your friend Judy you were late

We'll buy a house
I'll get a job,
I'll stay home every night
I'll quit the drinking
and the drugs
and try to do what's right

Will you take a chance? ...with me......."

So, something a little less serious or more lighthearted, whichever you prefer.

'Void' is the stalkers name, and where he is.
It plays off the rebuff, the cold shoulder ('avoid'), and the anonymity that it seems most of these sociopaths live in.
There's always a neighbor interviewed on TV who says:
"He was a quiet guy, kept to himself..."
He is not a serial killer, but maybe he just got started.
It's her fault anyway "..feline, sublime, danger magnet....", society's fault, etc.

No song that I have written is about a single person. People, phrases, situations are all springboards.
'All Wrong' is about two different relationships with problems, treated as one. Who's problem is it really? (the speaker)
'Anyway' is about no one -I heard something about 'laughing or crying' and ran with it. A bunch of denial in there also.
'Give It Up' was written in a meeting at work. (sshhhhh...)It's about constantly reinventing the wheel. Commentary, I suppose.
'My Afternoon' happened because I was looking through photographs of a former girlfriend to throw away, and I made up a sad tale about that.
(that one has some angry retribution in it also)
'Green' is about money. Primarily the lack of, desire for, and demand for what you owe and are owed. What I owe, and what I owe you.
"Pay me now, you know I owe. I owe it's off to work I go". You can thank the Seven Dwarfs for that part. (But I think Sleepy wrote most of their lyrics) :)
I usually introduce it onstage as a song about "the thing you love to hate, or hate to love"
'Green' is my clever-clever lyric: "You pay the bills, you pay the rent, you waste it all, until you're spent", "debt is up around your neck, you can swing the payments, from a rope"...ha...clever puns.

"A" songs are about relationships
"G" songs are social commentary
"V" songs are about retribution and revenge
"D" songs are about .........

We have been in semi-hibernation from the public eye.
There was this D Colony reunion gig you might have heard of (see last blog entry), then there was the mix downs for that, which took a couple of nights. then there was getting over the shock and awe of the results....

22 Years

Wow!
22 Years since Tom and Herman had played music with John Boudreau, yet they clicked like it was yesterday, or the day before yesterday, or maybe last year...
I asked John " Want to start with 'All Wrong'? Remember it..?"
and John said "No, not really" !! We wrote that song!
I thought that was a bad sign, but he picked up all the songs, and we played a few new ones with him also.
Long Live D Colony
I also played a little drop D death metal-ish thing with Chris James - I'll add a link to his site later - and Dan Bruno played also, who mainly plays drums for blues bands. It was pretty cool.
The whole session was recorded, and maybe I'll get around to mixing the songs down, soon.
Relatively soon. Relative to the cooling of the earth 'soon'. Like everything I do.

Much thanks to Danny, who graciously let us jam in hs living room, and his neighbors, who didn't start banging on the walls until 10:30 pm - or at least that's when we first heard them.
It was good to see you again Danny.

A void getting run down on Long Island

The title says it all....

Still busy writing - newest song is 'Void', which appears to be about jumping into something headfirst, when you know you shouldn't, you know you CAN'T, but you just have to do it.
Ultimately, it's a song about desire, disappointment, jealousy, anger, retribution, revenge and perhaps even murder.
I know what you are thinking: Same old, same old…. Yeah, well, maybe we are in an ideological rut, but maybe we’ll do a happy song soon. If we ever get happy.

Last night, had to practice without Clay Jones, who you may know was run over by a Silver SUV last Thursday on Caroline Street, at about 2:00 am.
If you witnessed that event, please do not hesitate to call the police. Other witnesses didn’t get the tag number.

Clay’s doing OK, for a beat-up guy with a bad knee, on crutches. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Clay.
We’ll get the b*st*rd, sooner or later.

Other news:

Some of you know that ½ of the (basement) started playing together on Long Island, NY in 1983, and that band (the legendary underground cult phenomenon D Colony ) broke up after 2 wildly successful years, only because of the diverging paths of the musician’s lives. Namely the drums moved to Japan, and the bass moved to Florida.

Well, tomorrow, April 6^th, 2007 will be the 1^st time in over 22 years that all the original members of D Colony will play together again. One night only.

The air is thick with anticipation….Will John remember any of the old songs? Will John drink Whisk? (again) Will the old geezers be able to stay awake past 9:00pm?

I’ll report back after the NY trip.

Playing with Vic, Practicing New Songs

So Victor came out last night (practice), and Clay unveiled the new 48 track board.
That's right 48 tracks!
We are writing new songs, with tentative titles like "Love is the Answer" and "411".
The guess would be that they are going to be 'keepers'.
Victor sang a few at the end.

We get a night off, while the bass player goes to Disneyworld.
